about

This is an original piece I've made in the style of celebrated composer Joe Hisaishi. I wanted to get under hood of Hisaishi's approach, and employ similar Japanese scoring techniques. In particular, things like the "Royal Road" chord progression that finds its way into so much Japanese music.

What's a real signature of Hisaishi's style is his fusion of Jazz with 19 century Romanticism, minimalism, and early 20th century film scoring. This combination is both genius and very difficult to replicate. He often changes key multiple times in a single phrase, his chords move all over the place, and has a tendency to loops passage for loan periods of time when he has a phrase he particularly likes. A sort Philip Glass crossed with Duke Ellington.

While I don't think I've achieved that yet, I'm still very pleased with what I've made. This is certainly a first step onto that path of understanding what makes Hisaishi tick.
